Collisions can be painful.

Consider the catcher blocking home plate as a massive base runner comes barreling down the third base line trying to beat the throw. His primary task is to make the tag, but he’ll have to embrace a spearing by the runner to carry out his responsibility.

Perhaps you’ve experienced a fender-bender when driving. All it takes is a split-second distraction for one car to plow into the back of another. And even if physical injuries are nonexistent, someone is bound to feel the pain of dealing with the insurance agency.

Collisions are a part of life, and yet there seems to be some price to pay when they occur. Whether it’s physical, financial, or even spiritual, a significant collision may cost us something either temporal or eternal.

The greatest collision mankind has ever seen happened when Heaven collided with earth. In the small town of Bethlehem, Jesus—God in human flesh—was born into our sinful world. However, that’s not where the collision ended. In fact, it was only getting started.

As Jesus grew in age, His following grew in number. The countercultural message He preached was attractive to some for the same reason it was rejected by others. Jesus, with the authority of the Father, taught what it meant to live for the kingdom of God. By bringing the teachings of Heaven to the people of earth, Jesus created a collision course that went straight to the heart.

As you study and teach these lessons, you’ll be introduced to this collision between Heaven and earth. You’ll examine the teachings of Jesus through the Sermon on the Mount and other Gospel passages and see how His words changed the world.

Take some time to study this historic collision. But don’t forget: collisions can be painful. As you study the teachings of Jesus don’t be surprised if the Holy Spirit gets a hold of your heart and brings conviction. When we collide with the words of Jesus our lives will never be the same. There may be pain in the process, but the rewards of that collision are eternal.
